The Opera Medicea Laurenziana has organized evening openings of San Lorenzo Basilica in Florence on September 14, 21 and 28 2016 with guded tours in Italian, and on September 28 at 7.15 PM also in English, in cooperation with the professionale guides of Mercurio association, to raise funds for the restoration of the church bell tower, commissioned by the Palatine Electress Anna Maria Luisa, the last heir of the Medici Family, who donated the immense artistic collections of her family to the state and to Florence.
These evening tours offer the unique opportunity to see the church from the counter facade by Michelangelo, exceptionally open on this occasion, and to admire the Old Sacristy by Brunelleschi with a new ighting.
In 1516 Michelangelo was commissioned by the Medici Pope Leo X to make a project for the church façade but it was never carried out. A few years later he succeeded in building the church counter façade with a great respect for Brunelleschi’s architecture. The balcony of the counter façade is actually the best point of view to admire all its elegant and rational soberness.
Entrance fee 15 euros per person + 1 euro for on line reservation www.operapedicealaurenziana.org.
