On September 8, 1296 the building of Florence Cathedral was started.
Over the centuries works were carried out under the supervision of the Opera del Duomo, an organization which was founded by the city government to look after the building and the maintenance of the church.
Every year the foundation of the Cathedral is celerated. Only on this day the light blue flags of the Opera del Duomo can be seen at the top of the church facade and free entrance is granted to visit the Baptistery, the Duomo Museum and to climb Giotto’s Bell tower.
Moreover the “Bottega del Duomo” (the workshop of the Cathedral) is exceptionally open to the public so that everyone can admire the work made by the master stonecutters to maintain the unique marble decoration of Cathedral, Bell Tower and Baptistery.
