Enjoy this Tour of the Uffizi gallery with a stroll through the less travelled Oltrarno. The Uffizi & Oltrarno Tour is a rare opportunity to visit and explore an unrevealed side of Florence. The “Oltrarno” – other side of the Arno river – is a lesser- known district of Florence where skillful craftsmen work in ateliers next to grandiose Renaissance palaces. You’ll learn more about this lesser known part of Florence, before going to the Uffizi Gallery to admire world famous paintings by great masters. With 5 to 8 participants a coffee break (Art Cafè) is included at the end of the tour to exchange opinions with the guide.
This tour begins in the neighborhood across the river know as ”Oltrarno”, or the artisans district , a perfect opportunity to have an insider’s view of Florence away from the hustle and bustle of the city center. We stroll down the side streets to view the workshops while observing the elegant historical buildings and noble palaces before reaching the Uffizi Gallery.
The Uffizi were originally built to house the offices of the “Magistrates”, strategically located next to the duke’s government palace. The duke then had a passage way built to connect the government palace both to the administrative offices and to his palatial residence on the other side of the river. This mansion is known as Palazzo Pitti, the surname of the first owners of the building.
The Uffizi Gallery impresses the visitor not only for its magnificent architecture but also for the endless number of masterpieces, in particular of the Italian Renaissance. We’ll view some of the major works by great masters such as Giotto, Botticelli, Leonardo and Michelangelo while admiring the breathtaking views of the city from the Gallery windows. The tour ends inside the museum to have more time to enjoy this unique collection.
